Blog Tour: Dream Magic by Joshua Khan (Dream Cast)

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to be on the blog tour for Dream Magic by Joshua Khan! First, here’s more about the book:

A fabulously exciting sequel to the fantasy adventure SHADOW MAGIC.

People throughout Gehenna are disappearing, even the feared executioner Tyburn. Many of the nobles believe the kidnappings to be the work of the northern trolls, raiding south for the winter, and when Baron Sable and others head off to fight them, Castle Gloom is left guarded by only the squires.

Lily is struggling with her growing necromantic powers. The castle fills with ghosts, drawn like moths to a flame by the brightness of her magic. Zombies roam the country, some left over from those raised in SHADOW MAGIC, others awakened by Lily. Families are troubled by the returning dead, so Lily tries to incorporate them into day-to-day life, much to the resentment of the living.

Then Lily is attacked in her own castle by a mysterious sorcerer known as Dreamweaver, a young man determined to conquer Gehenna using jewel-spiders, strange crystalline creatures whose bite doesn’t kill, but sends victims to sleep. Lily soon discovers that Dreamweaver is harvesting dreams to fuel his magic.

Lily enters the realm of sleep known as the Dream Time, in an attempt to awaken all the captive dreamers. Instead she finds herself trapped within a dream, one where her family is still alive. With the help of Thorn and the ever loyal Hades, she must somehow overcome the evil Dreamweaver by using his own magic against him – and reclaim her kingdom.

And now for the Dream Cast, as presented by Joshua Khan! Enjoy!

The Dream Cast for Shadow Magic

I don’t know any author who doesn’t play this game. Just between you and me we have had some film and tv interest, but Hollywood hasn’t quite come knocking, yet!

Ok, so lets pretend that Peter Jackson is looking to get back into fantasy and has invited me over to his pad in sunny New Zealand. We get out the ‘Who’s Who’s’ of the acting world and start flicking through…

TYBURN, the executioner. Tricky, he’s the ultimate badass killer, but a bit old, a bit worn out and, if you saw him in a crowded room, you really wouldn’t notice him. He’s a man doing a job, simple as that. So he can’t be Sean Bean or Idris Elba, he can’t look heroic, he’s not a hero. So I’d go for Hugo Weaving, the chap who plays Elrond in the Lord of the Rings movies.

PANDEMONIUM SHADOW. Now Pan’s a sad figure, a hero who’s past his glory days and more than a little bitter. So I want someone who was the handsome lead, ten, twenty years ago, but is showing his age and starting to play older character roles. But someone with a hint of danger, the old fires of his younger, adventurous self haven’t been totally extinguished. I had this actor in mind pretty much from Day One. James Purefoy. James has played plenty of action roles, knows how to handle a sword, and is just over fifty. Ridiculously handsome, but not pin-up. He’d need to fatten up for Pan though.

LORD IBLIS SHADOW. Lily’s dad. Tall, imposing, brooding and clever, oh so very clever. Yes, who else could it be but our own Sherlock, Benedict? Easy win, he was in my mind as I wrote Iblis. And with him as Dr. Strange, he’s already building up experience playing sorcerers!

The other key thing is you can see him and James as brothers, they both have an intensity. Benedict’s is more cerebral, James’s more physical, which suits the characters of Iblis and Pan perfectly.

SALOME SHADOW. You meet Lily’s mom in DREAM MAGIC, and she’s a big deal. A lot of Lily’s attitude comes from her mother, again something I expand upon in DREAM MAGIC. I’m a huge fan of MacBeth, so Salome has a bit of Lady M in her DNA. Here is a woman who will protect her family with cold, deadly elegance. While no sorcerer like Iblis, she had to be able to stand her own ground. In a way the Iblis/Salome dynamic is the opposite of Lily/Thorn. Thorn has no magic, like Salome, but we know Lily could never survive or grow without him. The same applies to Iblis and Salome.

So, there is only one actress that matches, Monica Bellucci. Apart from being inhumanly beautiful, she’s got a razor sharp mind and Sicilian on-top of all that. I’ve been smitten by her ever since she played a vampire bride in Bram Stoker’s Dracula back in the early 1990s. It will be a surprise to no-one that I’m a fan of all things gothic and the vampire remains my favourite monster. So, Monica forever.

MARY. This is a big role. Where would Lily be without her dear, devoted nanny? Mary’s the real no nonsense ruler of Castle Gloom. Even Iblis did as he was told when she was around. So we need someone who’s got natural authority, someone who can command even the heroes with just a raise of her eyebrow. Another easy win. There is only one actress I can think of who can do that. Dame Judi Dench. She’s even played James Bond’s boss!

Okay, now to the top four. Our young leads. This becomes tricky as the clock’s ticking. Our heroes are all young teens, so whoever I pick may age out pretty darn quick. Plus I’m not that up to speed with the younger generation of actors. Hey, everyone under thirty seems ridiculously young to me!

GABRIEL. There are two versions of the boy. The one projected by his magic. Handsome, glamorous, the perfect prince. Teen pin up all the way. If there was a teen Hemsworth brother, we’d be sorted. Hey, why don’t we go with that? So here’s a picture of a young Chris Hemsworth missing a shirt. You’re welcome.

K’LEEF. K’leef’s from the Sultanate of Fire. That kingdom is a mix of mythic Arabia and India, think Arabian Nights. So we need an actor from that part of the world. India has the biggest film industry in the world but few actors ever cross over to be recognised by Western audiences. So, my choice is pretty limited, even more so than just the usual batch of young actors.

Fortunately those we do have are awesome. My favourite actor right now is Riz Ahmed, but he’s for a future role as one of K’leef’s older brothers (have I mentioned Book, 3, BURNING MAGIC?).

Thus for K’leef we’ll go with Suraj Sharma, the lead from the Life of Pi. Here he is, holding a white tiger cub. Again, you’re welcome.

LILY. My kids are big fans of Victorious, it’s pretty much all that’s ever on now that Step Up seems to have finished. I’ve got the same problem here, Lily’s thirteen but I don’t know any actresses that age. I’ll have to go with Victoria Justice, though she is too old (ridiculous to use that phrase on someone barely over 20), so the casting director will have to go look for a ‘Victoria Justice’ type I suppose. Lily’s glamorous (she is a princess after all) but sharp-tongued and dedicated to her people. She’s got to act older than she is yet show she’s still a child, trying to find her way in the world, all the while bearing the burden of ruling a country. That’s a big ask for an actress.

THORN. The thing is, Thorn’s not anyone’s idea of handsome. That’s not being cruel, he just just isn’t. Sure, Gabriel has his magic to make him look the way he is, and K’leef has that dark-eyed exotic working for him. Thorn may grow up to have a rugged charm, but right now he’s just a scrappy peasant boy. What matters is his courage, and his moral compass. Alone out of the whole cast, he knows what’s right and what’s wrong. This is something I’ve spent a long time dwelling on and if you’ve come to any of my talks you’d have heard me discuss the difficulty in knowing right from wrong. So the actor has to have a determination in him, much more important that straight teeth and clear skin.

Billy Elliot is one of my fav films. Billy’s very much cut from the same cloth as Thorn. He’s unsophisticated, but honest and knows what he wants. If we could turn back the clock then we’d have the perfect actor. Any Jamie Bell types out there nowadays?

There we have it, my cast for SHADOW MAGIC. Of course I’d demand a walk on part for myself, a zombie in the background would suit me just fine!

If her love life is going down in flames, she might as well spark a revolution.

Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on.

Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.

Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.

At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can’t hav

Don’t just fight the system…burn it.

Since discovering she is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday (surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a “crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for rule-breaking…

But sneaking around with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed to someone else. Someone who isn’t a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former archnemesis Jaxon Westgate isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally.

Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.

Bryn’s hopes for a peaceful new semester at school go up in smoke when someone tries to kill her—again. She’s not sure which is scarier, facing the radicals who want to sacrifice her for their cause, or her impending nightmare of a Directorate-arranged marriage to her nemesis, Jaxon.

The one bright spot in her life is Valmont, her smoking-hot knight who is assigned to watch over her twenty-four hours a day. Is what she feels for him real or just a side effect of the dragon-knight bond? At this point, stopping the impending civil war might be easier than figuring out her love life.

She may have to live in their world, but she doesn’t have to play by their rules.

Bryn McKenna has it all. Even though she’s a hybrid dragon, she’s finally fitting in the new shape-shifting dragon world that’s become her own. But her grandparent’s want to ruin everything by making Bryn’s nightmare of an arranged marriage to Jaxon Westgate a reality. It doesn’t help that Jaxon’s father is on a witch hunt for Rebel sympathizers and Bryn finds herself in his line of fire.

If she doesn’t say “I do,” she’ll lose everything. Good-bye flying. Good-bye best friends. Good-bye magic. But if she bends to her grandparents’ will and agrees to marry Jaxon she’ll lose the love of her life—her knight.

Blog Tour: To Catch a Killer by Sheryl Scarborough (Author Interview)

Hey guys! I’m so, so excited to be on the blog tour for To Catch a Killer by Sheryl Scarborough (Tor Teen, February 7, 2017)! You can find my review here – I absolutely loved this book! First, here’s the cover and synopsis:

Erin Blake has one of those names. A name that, like Natalee Holloway or Elizabeth Smart, is inextricably linked to a grisly crime. As a toddler, Erin survived for three days alongside the corpse of her murdered mother, and the case—which remains unsolved—fascinated a nation. Her father’s identity unknown, Erin was taken in by her mother’s best friend and has become a relatively normal teen in spite of the looming questions about her past.

Fourteen years later, Erin is once again at the center of a brutal homicide when she finds the body of her biology teacher. When questioned by the police, Erin tells almost the whole truth, but never voices her suspicions that her mother’s killer has struck again in order to protect the casework she’s secretly doing on her own.

Inspired by her uncle, an FBI agent, Erin has ramped up her forensic hobby into a full-blown cold-case investigation. This new murder makes her certain she’s close to the truth, but when all the evidence starts to point the authorities straight to Erin, she turns to her longtime crush (and fellow suspect) Journey Michaels to help her crack the case before it’s too late.

And now for the interview! Enjoy!

Question: To Catch a Killer sounds BEYOND amazing. What inspired you to write it?
Answer: I LOVE mysteries and I LOVE forensic shows, even before they were labeled forensic shows. Quincy ME, CSI, NCIS, Bones, even Veronica Mars—you name it, I watch it. The idea for To Catch a Killer came during a phone call to a friend of mine who moved to Denver, Colorado. I asked how his kids were doing in their new school. His son, Tyler, was in high school and I was worried about how the change in schools would affect him. He told me that Tyler was extremely happy there and it was largely due to his high school forensics class. I was like …what? Where can I sign up for that? I wrote down: three girls solve mysteries in high school forensics class. And, the idea was born. I was already writing for children’s television and had never seen a show or a book about teens using forensics techniques. I knew in that instant that this idea was MINE!

Question: Catch a Killer was described as being NCIS meets Veronica Mars. Do you think that’s an accurate description?
Answer: Yes, Catch a Killer is definitely a mash-up of Veronica Mars and NCIS because the issues and the stakes in Catch a Killer are very high and very personal to my protagonist, Erin, in the same way they were personal and very high for Veronica. Erin has a detective eye but to prove her case she uses actual forensic procedures which is a lot like Abby Sciuto in NCIS. Erin’s personal story is full of raw, untempered emotion which collides with the cold, hard facts of science.

Question: Do you feel pressure to live up to that description for the sake of fans of those shows?
Answer: I definitely feel the pressure, but also the glory. But I’m such a fan of these shows that I feel like I know what the fans want to see and I’m trying to keep my stories stocked with all of that fun stuff. When I say “the glory” I mean that I’m extremely proud to add my contribution to this genre. In the whole scheme of things I might have written and sold another type of book and that would have been fun. But this book is from my heart. To Catch a Killer is part of ME.

Question: I’m sure you had to Google some pretty interesting things while writing this book! Can you share one (or several) of the craziest things you had to look up?
Answer: Oh boy! My google history is terrifying. We have a joke in my family that if anyone disappears, I will be the prime suspect because I’ve probably googled a million ways to kill someone…dispose of the body…obliterate fingerprints…you name it. One of the craziest things I searched for, though, was googling for “how to create a stain that looks like real blood.”

Question: According to your bio, you’ve written everything from TV scripts to series concepts, comic books, children’s books, business plans and magazine articles. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned, across the board?
Answer: Only one? What I’ve learned from what has really been a life-long writing career is that no matter how accomplished you are, there’s always more to learn. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. And most importantly, always…ALWAYS offer a hand to the writers who are still finding their way. Other writers helped me and I do my best to pay the favor forward.

Question: In your bio, you said, “My transition from film to fiction was harder than I thought it would be.” Can you elaborate?
Answer: I wanted to be a writer when I grew up, but I always thought I’d be a journalist. I believed I didn’t know how to create made up stories, that I needed a true story to work from. While I was in college, I landed a job at an animation studio as a script typist. Truth be told I didn’t type all that well. But I was congenial and got along with the crazy writers. They are the ones who ultimately helped me transition into writing for the studio. In fact, Catch a Killer is dedicated to the man who gave me my first script assignment and who remained a friend for life.

Question: What books do you recommend for readers who love your books and want to read something similar?
Answer: I recommend anything written by April Henry… Gretchen McNeil… or Bill Cameron. They are terrific mystery authors and their books have both inspired me and kept me awake at night.

Question: Are you working on anything new?
Answer: Always! Writers are like sharks. If we stop writing…we die! I am working on a High School Zombie story…a middle grade Valkyrie adventure and a thriller road trip love story. Whew!

Beware the goblin men and the wares they sell.

All her life, nineteen-year-old Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, mysterious Goblin King. He is the Lord of Mischief, the Ruler Underground, and the muse around which her music is composed. Yet, as Liesl helps shoulder the burden of running her family’s inn, her dreams of composition and childish fancies about the Goblin King must be set aside in favor of more practical concerns.

But when her sister Käthe is taken by the goblins, Liesl journeys to their realm to rescue her sister and return her to the world above. The Goblin King agrees to let Käthe go—for a price. The life of a maiden must be given to the land, in accordance with the old laws. A life for a life, he says. Without sacrifice, nothing good can grow. Without death, there can be no rebirth. In exchange for her sister’s freedom, Liesl offers her hand in marriage to the Goblin King. He accepts.

Down in the Underground, Liesl discovers that the Goblin King still inspires her—musically, physically, emotionally. Yet even as her talent blossoms, Liesl’s life is slowly fading away, the price she paid for becoming the Goblin King’s bride. As the two of them grow closer, they must learn just what it is they are each willing to sacrifice: her life, her music, or the end of the world.

~*~*~

This book was absolutely beautiful and completely intoxicating; it left me feeling breathless, like I was spinning and dizzy and knew I should stop, but couldn’t put it down. It spoke to me in ways a book never has – and I’ve been a reader all my life, so that’s a LOT of books that never spoke to me such as this one did. I was completely absorbed in the world, writing and characters.

Liesl is passionate, rash and impulsive, prone to fits of rage, to highs and lows. To self-sabotage and self-doubt. The author said something about Liesl in her newsletter and I can 100% see it. I won’t say what it is for fear of spoilers, but it explains so much and I think it fits perfectly. This thing, it’s a part of her and makes her who she is.

The Goblin King. The Lord of Mischief. The Ruler Underground. He was a complete mystery, yet he was fascinating. I wanted to know everything about him and, though I finished this book ages ago, I still do. I can’t get him out of my head. One second, he was the Goblin King – distant, cold, foreboding. And the next, he was the boy Liesl used to know – kind, caring, passionate. He was also stubborn and his moods mirrored Liesl’s, causing them to butt heads quite often. Yet even when they were butting heads, there was undeniable chemistry between them.

The writing in this book is so gorgeous and elegant. It has an old-time feel to it that I love. It was described as being based on the movie Labyrinth, but it also seems to hint at a certain Greek Myth. I don’t know for sure if I’m right or not on this, but if I am, then I’m even more in love with this book than I originally thought I was. You guys know I love Greek mythology more than anything! (I also won’t say which Greek Myth I think it is to avoid spoilers – you’ll have to read the book and see for yourself!)

I can understand why some people didn’t enjoy this book – Again, it was described as being a Labyrinth retelling and I think many people expected something closer to the movie. But in my opinion, this book is loosely based on the movie and if you think too much of the movie while reading this, you might feel a bit let down. I urge you to go into this book knowing it’s not exactly the movie. It has hints of the movie, but it is its own thing entirely, as well. If you do that, I think you’ll really, really enjoy it.

So.. *Takes shuddering breath.* I really can’t even think what else to say. This book really just blew me away, more than I ever imagined a book could. More than I thought this book could. I expected to love it, but I didn’t expect it to speak to my soul. I never thought any book would ever do that. This is one I will cherish for many years to come. One that I have a feeling I’ll want to re-read often. I (obviously) absolutely can’t wait for the second book. For more interactions between Liesl and the Goblin King. For more background and history regarding the Goblin King. For the reveal of his true name. And for so much more than that, which I can’t even put into words.

Obviously, I MORE than recommend this book. It’s the one I’ll be telling EVERYONE they should read. It’s by far one of the most amazing books I’ve read in a long time. It’s up there with Harry Potter and with Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series, of which I recently finished A Court of Mist and Fury – another book that I gushed about and highly recommend. These two were by far my favorite reads of 2016 (because even though Wintersong is a 2017 debut, I read it in 2016) and I will never stop recommending them, as you can see in my 2016 End of Year Book Survey, in which you can see how often I recommended these two books!

So… Go buy this book! Go read this book! Go LOVE this book! Seriously, I can’t recommend it enough!

Hey everyone! Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Batgirl at Super Hero High by Lisa Yee (January 3, 2017 – Random House Books for Young Readers). This book was an incredibly fun read, so I’m really excited to be a part of this blog tour! I hope you enjoy my review!

~*~*~*~*~

I’ve loved every book in this series so much and they just keep getting better! The plot was intriguing, the characters are likable/relatable and the writing is great! I really love that Batgirl doesn’t have super powers, that she’s a regular girl struggling to be a super hero while staying true to herself. It makes her more relatable and it makes you want to root for her even more.

I’m getting more and more intrigued by all the “super heroes” who become villains. With some of them, you can tell they’re not super hero material because they’re a bit (or more) mean and nasty. They don’t use their powers for good. But then others, like Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, are kind, funny and have so many friends. It just makes me wonder what the tipping point was for them. What made them “turn” evil? On a similar note, I still desperately want Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn books – Especially since, for the first time, Harley Quinn showed a different side of herself, more like the “grown-up” version of her we know from the DC Comics.

All the tech stuff in this book was crazy! Also, very realistic – in the sense that, we rely so heavily on technology, it would be scary if it completely shut down or starting acting haywire. It really makes you stop and think!

As I mentioned in my reviews for Wonder Woman and Supergirl, as someone who didn’t devour the DC comics, I was definitely a little bit behind on who everyone was and what some of the references were – though it’s getting easier to remember everyone with every book I read. As I’ve mentioned in the previous reviews, I think this book’s level of entertainment would have been upped a notch if I HAD read the comiccs, but I never felt like I was at a disadvantage because I hadn’t read them.

The ending of this book was the most intriguing thus far, with a very puzzling cliffhanger that has me eager for the next book! It was a short, fast read that I highly recommend to anyone who loves the DC comics, as well as to anyone who wants to get into the comics, but who wants a quick and easy introduction to the characters first!

Hey everyone! Today, I have an awesome excerpt to share with you from Amanda Hocking’s Freeks. This book looks epic!!!! First, here’s more about the book:

Welcome to Gideon Davorin’s Traveling Sideshow, where necromancy, magical visions, and pyrokinesis are more than just part of the act…

Mara has always longed for a normal life in a normal town where no one has the ability to levitate or predict the future. Instead, she roams from place to place, cleaning the tiger cage while her friends perform supernatural feats every night.

When the struggling sideshow is miraculously offered the money they need if they set up camp in Caudry, Louisiana, Mara meets local-boy Gabe…and a normal life has never been more appealing.

But before long, performers begin disappearing and bodies are found mauled by an invisible beast. Mara realizes that there’s a sinister presence lurking in the town with its sights set on getting rid of the sideshow freeks. In order to unravel the truth before the attacker kills everyone Mara holds dear, she has seven days to take control of a power she didn’t know she was capable of—one that could change her future forever.

And now here’s the excerpt!

5. carnival

Unlike many of the other members of the sideshow, I didn’t have a specific job. My mom was a fortune- teller, Gideon did a magic show, Zeke had his tigers, Brendon and his family did acrobatics, Seth was a strongman. My best friend Roxie Smith was in two acts— she helped out Zeke, and did a peepshow revue with two other girls.

I had no talent. No special ability, making me essentially a roadie. I did what was needed of me, which usually involved helping set up and take down, and various menial tasks. I cleaned the tiger cages and emptied out latrines when I had to. It wasn’t a glamorous job, but it was crucial to our way of life.

Since Roxie worked with the tigers, Mahilā actually tolerated her. Roxie was helping me clean out the tiger cage they traveled in. The cage was open to a fenced-in enclosure Seth had built, so the tigers could roam as they pleased.

Safēda lounged in the grass, the sun shining brightly on her white fur. Whenever we stopped, Safēda seemed content to just lay in the sun, sleeping the entire time, but as the older tiger, it made sense.

Mahilā paced along the fence, occasionally emitting an irritated guttural noise in between casting furtive glances back toward Roxie and me. Her golden fur was mottled with scars from her past life in the abusive circus, including a nasty one that ran across her nose.

“So where did you go last night?” Roxie asked, her voice lilting in a sing song playful way. She was out in the run, using a hose to fill up a blue plastic kiddie pool so the tigers could play in it, while I was on my hands and knees scrubbing dung off the cage floor.

Her bleached blond hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and the sleeves of her white T- shirt were rolled up, revealing her well-toned arms. The cut- off jean shorts she wore barely covered her bum, and her old cowboy boots went up to her knees— her chosen footwear anytime she was at risk of stepping in tiger poop.

With fair skin, full lips, large blue eyes, and a dainty nose, Roxie was pretty and deceptively tough. Being a beautiful carnie was not an easy job, and dancing in the revue under the stage name “Foxy Roxie” didn’t help that. But she made decent money doing it, and Roxie never put up with anybody’s crap. I’d seen her deck guys much bigger than her and lay them out flat on their backs.

“I was just at a party,” I said as I rinsed the brush off in a bucket of bleach and warm water.

“A party?” Roxie looked over at me with a hand on her hip.

“How’d you get invited to a party so fast?”

I shrugged. “I was just exploring town, and I saw some people hanging outside of this big house party, and they invited me in.”

“So what are the people like here? Are they nice?”

Safēda had gotten up and climbed into the pool, and then she flopped down in it, splashing Roxie as she did. Roxie took a step back, but kept looking at me.

“I don’t know. The people I met last night seemed nice, and they were superrich, so that bodes well for the town, I guess.”

“Like how rich?” Roxie asked.

“Like their house is practically a mansion.” I dropped the brush in the water and sat back on my knees, taking a break to talk to her. “It was the nicest house I’ve ever been in, hands down.”

“Is that why you spent the night there?”

Roxie understood my fascination with houses. Well, “understood” wasn’t the right word. It was more like she knew of it, but didn’t understand it all. She’d grown up in an upper- middleclass family, in nice houses with basements, and thought they were about as boring and lame as she could imagine.

“Partly.” I nodded. “It was a really amazing house. There were pillars out front, and the front hall was bigger than my trailer.”

“It’s just a house, Mara.” Roxie shook her head.

“I know but . . .” I trailed off, trying to think of how to explain it to her. “You know how you felt when you first joined the sideshow two years ago? How everything seemed so exciting and fun, and I was like, ‘We live in cramped trailers. It kinda sucks.’”

Roxie nodded. “Yeah. But I still think this life is a million times better than my old life. I get to see everything. I get to decide things for myself. I can leave whenever I want. There’s nothing to hold me back or tie me down.”

She’d finished filling up the pool, so she twisted the nozzle on the hose to shut it off. Stepping carefully over an old tire and a large branch that the tigers used as toys, she went to the edge of the run and tossed the hose over the fence, before Mahilā
decided to play with it and tore it up.

She walked over to the cage and scraped her boots on the edge, to be sure she didn’t track any poop inside, before climbing up inside it.

“So what was the other reason?” Roxie asked.

I kept scrubbing for a moment and didn’t look up at her when I said, “Gabe.”

“Gabe?” Roxie asked. “That sounds like a boy’s name.”

“That’s because it is.”

“Did you have sex with him?”

“No.” I shot her a look. “We just made out a little.”

“What what what?” Luka Zajiček happened to be walking by just in time to hear that, and he changed his course to walk over to the tiger cage. “Is that what you were up to last night?”

“That’s what sucks about living in a community so small. Whenever anything happens, everybody knows about it right away,” I muttered.

Luka put his arms through the cage bars and leaned against it, in the area I’d cleaned already. Since he was rather short, the floor came up to his chest, and his black hair fell into his eyes.

His eyes were the same shade of gray as mine, but his olive skin was slightly lighter than mine. We first met him when he joined the carnival four years ago, and the first thing my mom said was that she was certain that we were related somehow.

Unfortunately, Mom knew next to nothing about our family tree to be able to prove it. All she could really tell me was that we were a mixture of Egyptian, Turkish, and Filipino, with a bit of German thrown in for good measure.

Luka had been born in Czechoslovakia, but he’d moved here with his family when he was young, so he’d lost his accent.

He had recently roped me into helping him with a trick. He’d stand with his back against a wall, while I fired a crossbow around him. Originally, Blossom had been the one to help him, but she kept missing and shooting him in the leg or arm, so he’d asked me to do it because I had a steadier hand.

“So you made out with some local guy last night?” Luka asked, smirking at me. “Are you gonna see him again?”

“He’s a local guy. What do you think?” I asked, and gave him a hard look.

Luka shrugged. “Sometimes you bump into them again.”

“And that goes so well when they find out that I work and live with a traveling sideshow,” I said.

The floor was spotless, or at least as spotless as tiger cages can get, and I tossed my brush in the bucket and took off my yellow rubber gloves.

“We can’t all meet our boyfriends in the sideshow,” I reminded Luka as I stood up, and it only made him grin wider. He’d been dating Tim— one of the Flying Phoenixes— for the past three months.

“But you didn’t see Blossom anywhere in town last night?” Roxie asked, and Luka’s smile instantly fell away.

A sour feeling stirred in my stomach, and I looked out around camp through the bars of the cage, as if Blossom would suddenly appear standing beside a trailer. As I’d been doing my chores all morning, I kept scanning the campsite for her, expecting her to return at any moment with a funny story about how she’d gotten lost in town.

But so far, she hadn’t. And the longer she went without coming back, the worse the feeling in my stomach got. I shook my head. “No. I didn’t see her at all last night.”

“She’s gotta turn up, though, right?” Luka asked. “I mean, it’s not like there are really that many places she could’ve gone considering she has no money or car and she’s in a small town.”

The tigers were still down in the run, so I opened the side gate and hopped down out of the cage. Roxie got out behind me, then we closed the door.

“I should talk to Gideon,” I decided as Roxie locked the cage up behind me. “It’s not like Blossom to do this.”

“It’s not totally unlike her, though,” Roxie pointed out.

“When we were in Toledo six months ago, she dis appeared for a few days with that weird commune, and came back just before we were leaving, totally baked out of her mind.”

Blossom had grown up with parents who pretended to be hippies but were really just a couple of drug addicts. That— along with her unexplainable telekinesis— led to her dabbling with drugs and alcohol at a young age, before the state intervened and shipped her off to a group home.

My mom tried to keep her clean of her bad habits, but sometimes Blossom just liked to run off and do her own thing. That wasn’t that unusual for people who lived in the carnival.

“But if you’re worried, you should talk to Gideon,” Roxie suggested. “Luka’s right in that Blossom really couldn’t have gone far. Maybe you can scope out Caudry.”

“Since that sounds like a mission that may take a bit of time, can you help me and Hutch with the museum before you talk to Gideon?” Luka asked. “The exit door is jammed, and we can’t get it open, and Seth is busy helping set up the tents.”

“Sure. Between me and Mara, I’m sure the two of us can get the door unstuck,” Roxie said.

I dropped off the bucket with the other tiger supplies, and then followed Roxie and Luka away from our campsite to the fairgrounds on the other side of a chain- link fence. We always stayed close to the rides, the midway, and the circus tent, but we didn’t actually sleep there. It was much better for every one if we kept our private lives separate from the crowds.

Many of the games were already set up, and the Ferris wheel was in the process of being erected as we passed. Near the end of the midway was a long black trailer painted with all kinds of frightening images of werewolves and specters, along with happier pictures of mermaids and unicorns, and the sign was written in bloodred:

Beneath that were several smaller signs warning “Enter at your own risk. The creatures inside can be DISTURBING and cause NIGHTMARES.”

The entrance to the left was open, but the exit door at the other end was still shut. Wearing a pair of workman’s gloves, Hutch was pulling at the door with all his might. His neon green tank showed that his muscles were flexed and straining in effort. The bandana kept his dark brown hair off his face, but sweat was dripping down his brow.

“Let me have a try, Hutch,” Roxie said.

“What?” He turned to look back at her. “Door’s stuck.”

“I can see that. That’s why I said let me have a try.”

“Okay.” Hutch shrugged and stepped back.

Hutch’s real name was Donald Hutchence, but nobody ever called him anything but Hutch. He didn’t have any special powers, unless you considered being really agreeable and easygoing a super power, so, like me, he was left doing whatever else needed to be done.

Roxie grabbed the door and started pulling on it, and when it didn’t budge, I joined her.

“Luka, go and push from the inside,” Roxie commanded through gritted teeth.

Both Luka and Hutch went inside, pushing as Roxie and I pulled. And then all at once, the door gave way, and we all fell back on the gravel. I landed on my back, scraping my elbow on the rocks.

Roxie made it out unscathed, and Hutch fell painfully on top of me, so he’d avoided injury. Luka crashed right on the gravel, though, and the rocks tore through his jeans and ripped up his knees and the palms of his hands pretty badly.

“Do you need me to get a Band- Aid or anything?” Hutch asked as he helped me to my feet.

“No, I’ll be okay.” I glanced over at Luka and the blood dripping down his knees. “What about you? Do you want anything?”

“Nah. Just give it a few minutes.” Luka waved it off and sat down on the steps leading up to the museum door.

No matter how many times I saw it, I couldn’t help but watch. His knee was shredded, with bits of gravel sticking in the skin. Right before my eyes, the bleeding stopped, and the rocks started falling out, as if pushed by his flesh, and the skin grew back, reattaching itself where it had been little mangled flaps.

Within a few minutes, Luka’s knee was healed completely.

mrmr_1600“Smart and fast-paced with plenty of steam! This writing duo is a powerhouse of talent!” – New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan

He stole their riches, she stole his heart

The Marquess of Hawksfield’s lineage is impeccable and his title coveted, but Archer Croft is as far from his indulgent peers as he can get. His loathing for the beau monde has driven him to don a secret identity and risk everything in order to steal their riches and distribute them to the less fortunate.

Lady Briannon Findlay embraces her encounter with the Masked Marauder, a gentleman thief waylaying carriages from London to Essex. The marauder has stirred Brynn’s craving for adventure, and she discovers an attraction deeper than the charming thief’s mask.

Brynn is a revelation, matching Archer in intelligence, wit, and passion. Stubborn and sensuous in equal measure, she astonishes him at every turn, but when someone sinister impersonates Archer’s secret personality, and a murder is committed, Archer begins to think he doesn’t stand a fighting chance without her.

Hey everyone! Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for The Lost Codex by Heather Lyons! I’m very excited to be a part of this blog tour! I knew this book was going to be an emotional roller coaster because I’ve read all of Heather’s books. She’s amazing and her books are ALWAYS amazing and this series is ESPECIALLY amazing!!!!! But I also know she feeds on the tears of her readers, so I did my best to emotionally prepare myself… There was no emotionally preparing myself though… *Takes deep, shuddery breath*

So yeah… Without further adieu, I hope you enjoy my review! And after that, check out which villain I would like to see in the The Collectors’ Society world!

(REVIEW UPDATED 11/27/16)

~*~*~

This book broke me so bad, I don’t even know if I can form coherent sentences. The feels were powerful and the emotions were strong and I’m still hurting from this book hangover, even though I finished this book eleven days ago*. (*As of when I updated this review on 11/27/16)

via GIPHY

So.. I mean, I don’t even know where to start. Or how to be normal and coherent in this review. There’s a good chance I’ll be a babbling fool, honestly… So let’s just begin.

Alice is fierce and brave and amazing. I love her in the modern world and I seriously ship her and Finn together, but she BELONGS in Wonderland. She is a true queen, a leader. And her leadership, guidance and strong hand are needed in Wonderland. Her people need her. And as much as I adore Finn – poor Finn… – I seriously think I ship her more with the White King. But maybe that’s just the part of me that ships royal couples and prefers Wonderland to modern-day NYC..?

I still absolutely adore Mary, but I’m still dying to see her in her own timeline *Stares at Heather…* My heart broke for her and Victor in this book, but I’m satisfied with where the story ended, though it was a rough path to the end!

The A.D. has become one of my new favorite characters! He’s changed so much and he’s such a comic relief, which is MUCH NEEDED, considering the hell Heather puts her characters through!

As for the Librarian is….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY CRAP HER IDENTITY REVEAL WAS INSANE AND OMG I CAN’T EVEN WITH THE TEASING AND THE HINTS AND THE RED HERRINGS AND HOLY CRAP!!!

via GIPHY

I mean I just.. I don’t even know what else to say at this point. Like… look at these review notes:

screen-shot-2016-11-27-at-6-35-59-pm
I mean.. I just… I can’t…. This book was emotionally exhausting in all the best ways. I’ve always highly recommended Heather and her books and I obviously highly recommend this book, as well as this series. I’m 99% sure this is my favorite series of all her books. The emotional roller coaster, the feels, the craziness – it WILL drain you. But by the end, you’ll be so satisfied, you won’t even care! That’s the magic of Heather Lyons and her epic stories. So yeah… GO READ THEM!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Now for some fun!! We were asked to answer an intriguing question for this blog tour:

villain

My answer: Ursula from The Little Mermaid (the Disney version)

via GIPHY

Ursula always creeped me out as a kid. Especially the scene depicted in the GIF above.. *Shudders* She’s so evil and vindictive.. Her hatred for King Triton fuels her desire to destroy Ariel.

via GIPHY

Ursula has NO redeeming qualities. She doesn’t just seek to destroy Triton by destroying his daughter. She ACTIVELY intervenes to make sure the mermaid princess can’t achieve her goal within the contracted timeframe.

via GIPHY

via GIPHY

I think she would be a formidable foe for the Collectors’ Society team. She’s manipulative and cunning and her magic is fairly strong. with her ability to change her appearance, she can blend in and sneak right past them without them even knowing. Her ability to change her appearance also means she’s not limited to causing mayhem in the oceans – she can also access land.

Just imagine the harm she could cause, the catalysts she could destroy – or worse, warp with her magic into something evil… *Gulps*

And now for the excerpt! Enjoy!

“Is that something people lie about around here?” His blue jeans were worn, pulled over battered black combat boots. The sole of the left one was peeling away from the shoe. Did he think he could slack because Dad wasn’t here? That no one would see him and report back? Even if they had permission to be in civies, there were strict standards. While off duty, a soldier had to maintain a neat, well-groomed appearance. This was more an outfit worthy of a high school rebel, which, honestly, this guy didn’t look much older than.

The one in the back pushed him aside and came forward. Black hair fell just below his ears and had a slight wave to it. It was fuller than normally allowed, not even close to regulation. On some of our previous bases, hair standards weren’t strictly enforced. But at Hannity, they were sticklers. High and tight. Those were the rules.

Like the other guy, he had on a leather jacket with black fatigue pants tucked into slightly worn combat boots. Unlike the first, though, this one had seen some trouble in his day. There was a thin scar on the left side of his face. It went from just above his eyebrow, down across his eye and to the tip of his chin.

My pulse spiked a little as his gaze raked over me. Down and up, then up and down, lips parting slightly. I didn’t go for greenies, but this one sent the butterflies in my stomach tripping crazy. It was the scar. It added character to his angular face, suggesting that maybe there was more than meets the eye. Or possibly it was the way he was looking at me. With a spark of hunger and something close to wonder in his expression. I’d never had anyone look at me that way. Like I was something mythical and rare. A creature that shouldn’t exist. I twisted, shifting so that the door obscured just a little more of me from his view.

He hesitated, focus still trained on me, and for a moment I thought he might poke me to be sure I was real. Clearing his throat, he finally said, “I’m Private First Class Cade Granger, and this is…” He paused to glance over his shoulder. “Recruit Noah Emeal.”

“A private and a fuzzy Really?” I wasn’t sure if I should be pleased or insulted. I mean, why bother sending supervision at all if you were going to scrape the bottom of the barrel?

“I promise you’ll be safe with us, Miss Anderson.”

Miss Anderson. Huh. Maybe there wasn’t more to this guy. He sounded just like the rest of them. Formal and uptight. “That right? So you’re here to save me from myself?” Because, really, that was the problem, right? I couldn’t be trusted to keep myself out of trouble.

“I’m not sure I understand.” He tilted his head to the left, confused, but didn’t take his eyes off me. In fact, if anything, his gaze grew more intense. It was like he and I were the only ones in the room. In the world…

“I’d really appreciate it if you could stop staring.” I snapped. “I can’t tell if you’re mentally trying to strip me, or contemplating which way to cook my skin for Sunday dinner. Either way, it’s creeping me the hell out.”

A slick thriller from the author of HEXED, perfect for fans of THE CELLAR by Natasha Preston and PANIC by Lauren Oliver.

You are cordially invited to participate in a game of thrills and dares. Tell no one, and come alone. If you dare.

Hope is sick of everyone treating her like she’s breakable. Sure, she has cystic fibrosis (basically really bad lungs), but she’s tired of being babied by her mom and her overprotective best friend, Ethan, not to mention worrying about paying for her expensive medication and how she’s going to afford college. And she’s bored with life in her run-down New Orleans suburb.

When an invitation arrives from a mysterious group that calls itself the Society, Hope jumps at the chance for some excitement. This could be her ticket out. All she has to do is complete a few dares and she just might win some real money.
But the Society isn’t all that it seems . . . and soon Hope finds that playing the game isn’t a choice—it’s a requirement.

Hey everyone! Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Dead Girls Society by Michelle Krys (November 8, 2016 – Delacorte Press). I absolutely LOVED this book!!! It was an enthralling read and I’m really excited to share my review with you! Enjoy!

~*~*~

Dead Girls Society was an amazing thrill-ride of a book – intriguing and a bit terrifying. It was like The Skulls meets The Breakfast Club meets I Know What You Did Last Summer. I was excited to read it from the second I learned about it and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

There are a ton of characters in this book and they’re all intriguing and unique. I really liked the main character, Hope. She was brave and foolish and fierce and insane, all at once. Hartley was fearless and tough. The way her story ended shocked the crap out of me. Farrah surprised me in more ways than one. She broke the stereotypical mold she started out in and quickly became one of the more intriguing characters. I feel like we learned the least about Nikki, so it’s hard to say much about her. And Lyla… I don’t even know where to begin…

As for the guys, I wasn’t a huge fan of either Ethan or Tucker. I understand the reasons behind their actions, but Ethan acted like a child, more times than not, and Tucker just… I guess he wasn’t so bad, but I never fully liked him. I shipped Hope and Ethan in the beginning, but by the end, I just wanted Hope to tell both of them to eff off. I didn’t trust either of them, so that probably effected my feelings towards them a bit..

Every time I had to put this book down, I didn’t want to. The suspense was so intense – trying to figure out who’s behind this and who we can trust – and agonizing! Situations often escalated quickly and I reached a point where I was just didn’t trust anyone – and, as it turned out, I had good reason not to trust anyone! I had so many crazy theories and they were all over the place.

And then that ending.. The big reveal… HOLY CRAP. I never saw it coming. Once all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place, it made perfect sense. But before that? I never even got close to figuring it out. The very ending, especially? HOLY CRAP IT WAS SO I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER AND I LOVED IT AND I NEED BOOK TWO NOW, PLEASE!

Overall, if you couldn’t tell, I LOVED this book and everyone needs to read it ASAP! I was already a fan of Michelle Krys from reading Hexed. But this book and its intense thrill-ride has solidified my love for this author and her amazing stories.
